I can't really be sure. Where I have seen it is nearly always in US-dominated subreddits on Reddit, and where those posts have had a country be inferrable, it's pretty much always the US. So I was primed to agree when someone said they thought it was a US thing, but obviously it's a small enough sample size that I could be off-base with that. It could just be some internet subculture thing where all the visitors of those subreddits keep seeing it in each other's posts and think it's correct, haha.
